MCS & Cleaning Products

Not all "Green" or nontoxic cleaning products, homemade or otherwise, are healthy for people with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity

RE: My blog regarding homemade cleaning products: http://curezone.com/blogs/m.asp?f=309&i=87

First, let me state that I am very chemically sensitive.

I use organic apple cider vinegar to kill mold in my house. I even use it in home-made salad dressing. I seem to tolerate it very well. As for soap, I use scent-free, biodegradable dishwashing liquid (I prefer Seventh Generation or Planet brands) to clean my house. I use Bon Ami as the "scrubber". I stated all of this in my blog.

Dr. Dorothy Calabrese is an environmental medicine specialist in Laguna Hills, California. She wrote me after receiving an e-mail version of my blog regarding homemade cleaning products. She feels that vinegar in any form and castile soap are OUT for chemically sensitive people.

I asked her what she uses in her own home and office to kill mold and to clean. She responded:

" Vinegar is out. . . period.
Personally, I prefer to use Bon Ami, AFM products and a pressurized steam machine. "

American Formulating and Manufacturing (AFM) makes products for people with chemical sensitivity, including paint, sealants, and other products used in home construction:

They have a product called Safechoice X-158, which acts as a sealer against mold. According to their website, surfaces must be decontaminated before applying X-158.

I think the key is that people with MCS don't all have the same sensitivities. If you are chemically sensitive, you can take suggestions from others with MCS or specialists, but, unfortunately, it's still going to boil down to each person finding what works best for them through trial and error.

Be in Good Health!
Thanks for going Green!
