India is facing the problem of organ shortage because of the lack of organ donors in our country. It is estimated that about 1.5 lakh people suffer from end-stage kidney disease each year, out of which only 3,000 are lucky enough to obtain donors. In the same way, about 2 million people die each year from liver failure or other organ failures.

In India, more and more people must have to make the commitment to donate their organs, and then only the gap will be bridged between the supply and demand of organs. But people are not yet aware and informed about the benefits of organ donation. Today, in the age of the Internet, we are fortunate to have social media and many other online portals. They slowly began to make an impact on society by raising awareness and organizing social campaigns on organ donation.

It is estimated that an "organ donor can give life to at least seven people". Organ donation is the most impeccable and humane act that people can do for their country. In many Western countries, it is mandatory for the people to commit to donating organs while applying for a driving license. It is an effective measure that can help to increase the number of organ donors. However, in India, people are not enforced to become an organ donor, but we have to learn good things from other nations.

The organs that can be donated include the liver, lungs, heart, kidneys, pancreas, tissues, skin, bones, eyes, nerves, bone marrow, heart valves, brain, and bone of the ear, the eardrum and the blood. Prior to the donor's death a doctor cannot decide whether the organs and tissues are appropriate for the donation or not. You are never too old to be an organ donor; it implies that “you can become a donor at any stage of your life, no matter what your age”.

Right now in India, legitimately, it is your next of kin who will decide whether your organs are donate or not. Whether or not you have pledge your organs, no donation will be made unless the nearest relative gives permission. Therefore, before registering for organ donation, it is very important to discuss this issue with your family. This is to ensure the success of organ donation after your death.

There are numerous NGOs and hospitals are available in India which can help you if you wish to become an organ donor. Nonetheless, one can follow the following process to register as an organ donor:
