Wisdom is the beginning, or first, thing we need to succeed
Wisdom will promote and bring honor when it is embraced. Therefore, a lack of promotion and honor signals a lack of wisdom. ** Wisdom will promote and bring honor when it is embraced. It has to be pursued the way a man pursues a woman he is in love with.

Oh, that people were as concerned about being ornamented with wisdom and understanding as they were with fancy hairdos and jewelry!

Solomon had been speaking of the benefits of wisdom and understanding. Here, he was saying that wisdom and understanding will make the years of our lives many. Much too much importance is put on diet and exercise and not enough on wisdom and understanding
Proverbs 4:11
Solomon wrote this, but he was repeating the words of his father, David. So, this was David, Solomon’s father, speaking. He not only taught Solomon what was right but also demonstrated it. He certainly didn’t demonstrate it flawlessly. David sinned big time (2 Samuel 11). But he repented openly and continued seeking the Lord (2 Samuel 12).
This clearly illustrates that we don’t have to be perfect to leave a godly example. If we realize and repent of our mistakes and continue seeking the Lord in faith, that is a godly example.

Solomon followed the instruction and example of his father, David, in the first part of his reign. But in Solomon’s latter years, he forsook God, his steps were straitened, and he did stumble (1 Kings 11:1-9). He should have followed his father’s instructions and his own writings.

This means we are to hold on tight to instruction and not let it go. The fact that this command is needed reveals that instruction escapes easily. When everyone and everything around us is contradictory to what God is saying, it’s easy to lose the proper perspective (1 Corinthians 15:33).
