Depression is a common mental health disorder. It impacts 17.3 million adults each year in the U.S, or 7% of adults. Those who suffer from the symptoms of depression have all aspects of life involve. This includes including relationships, career, and school, and daily functioning. Of those with depression, 10 million people each year, or 64% of the total, will experience a severe version.

One of the barriers to treatment for major depression is the belief that it costs too much. People may assume that treatment is not covered by insurance and is therefore outside their reach. This causes them to not seek the help they need.

In fact, out of the millions of adults struggling with major depression, only 35% receive help from a mental health worker. In truth, group or private health plans and Medicare cover treatment to some degree.

The effects of not getting expert help for depression are serious. Depression can worsen over time, even making someone disabled in some cases. When people suffer for a prolonged time they are at risk for self-harm or suicide. Since 1999 there has been a connection found between rising rates of depression and rising rates of suicide.

Insurance companies have responded. They now offer coverage for depression treatment.  The depression rehab centers that accept insurance have grown greatly since passage of the Parity Act of 2008. This is the law that mandates equal weight be given for mental health and physical health treatment.
