The gut facilitates effective digestion and absorption of nutrients. It also houses most of the cells that defend us against infection and disease. Since the immune system responds first when the body is challenged by harmful substances, it is important to keep it healthy. Here are some of the most important supplements you can take to maintain a healthy gut.

1. Probiotics


Two types of bacteria are present in the gut: "good" bacteria and "bad" bacteria. Probiotics are good bacteria which need to be increased to maintain a balance of about 85 to 15 percent ratio of good to bad bacteria. People with insufficient probiotics usually experience a surge in the volume of harmful bacteria which can damage the gut. Unfortunately, the use of antibiotics, steroids, and poor diet can drastically reduce the volume of probiotics in the gut. Good natural sources of probiotics include Greek yogurt and tofu. 

2. Enzymes


Enzymes are required to break down all macro-nutrients such as protein, carbohydrate and fat. The enzymes act as catalysts and promote effective digestion in the stomach, and the absorption of nutrients in the small intestine. Enzymes also help to reduce food waste. Taking digestive enzymes will help people with a leaky gut to improve their digestion and speed up the repair of their gut. A good enzyme supplement should contain protease, lipase, lactase, and amylase which are responsible for breaking down proteins, fatty acids, glucose and sugar.

3. Fulvic Acid


Fulvic acid is produced in tiny quantities by millions of microorganisms that work on decaying plant matter. This substance is usually found in the soil and it serves as a powerful antioxidant. It turns free radicals in the gut into usable compounds and allows them to be excreted as waste. Fulvic minerals are prepared with fulvic acid and other compounds and they make nutrients more absorbable in the gut. They also help in the detoxification process. 

4. L-Glutamine
 

This is an amino acid that helps to heal the gut and promote proper digestion. Studies have shown that those who have high stress levels and chronic anxiety usually have low glutamine levels. This situation also increases the risk of leaky gut syndrome and other harmful medical conditions. L-glutamine is a very important component of cells that line the gut. So it is vital to take it, especially when there is a need for restoration of the gut lining.

5. Antifungals
 

Antifungals help to restore intestinal balance and deal with excess yeast or candida. Floral imbalance is a regular issue among those who have leaky gut syndrome. That's why they have been used for decades in many intestinal drugs. Examples of potent antifungals include: oregano oil, cellulose, and caprylic acid. These substances help to relieve stress on the intestine and repair the damage caused by floral imbalance.
