Gete Okosomin Planted in SDSU College Area Community Garden January 28, 2017.
One of the rare seeds of the Squash Gete Okosomin was planted January 28, 2017 on a very sunny day in the College Area Community Garden adjoining the SDSU, San Diego State University campus.
On a special day of work in the garden, international students from the campus ALI volunteered to do projects and there were also high school students from the LocallyGrown Club of a San Diego high school.
I had the opportunity to share about the legend of the 800 year old seeds that had been found in an urn. According to this legend, when the seeds were planted they grew! I brought one of the Gere Okosomin squashes home with me from the National Heirloom Expo last September. I call her My #PetCelebritySquash. She is still in great shape and was a big hit at the community garden!
It was inspiring to have Henry, the Garden President find a special plot for the seed to grow
The seeds came from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company.
I sent the local high school students home with a few packets of my Plant Your Dream Seeds, and a copy of the Whole Seed Catalog for their school library
It was inspiring to interact with the students.
I noted that one of the international students was hungry and asking for a breakfast bar. I will be going to the natural product expo in early March and that will be an opportunity to collect some samples for Henry to give away to the volunteers.
I also thought it would be inspiring to gather a list of the countries that the international students came from and gather heirloom seeds from those countries to show them.
The morning of the 28th, my first seed of Gete Okosomin, that had been planted in a ceremony on December 31 at the worldbeat multicultural Center, came up.
January 28 was a very busy day for me and I woke up feeling a bit under the weather. The seed coming up on that day seemed very auspicious. and motivated me to take the trip to the nearby garden.
I offered Garden president A copy of the call seed catalog from Baker Creek as a gift. He already had one at home on his coffee table. The next national Heirloom Expo is September 5-7, 2017 in Santa Rosa
I drive up there every year in my 68 VW van called the enchanted Garden mobile .
