The Fall Highlight of my Campaign to Grow A Healthier Pizza was successfully presenting two classes at the National Heirloom Expo September 10-11-12 in Santa Rosa. A major theme of the class was "Take Your Sacred Seed Out of the Pizza Box and Plant Your Dream!" I had wonderful interactions with the youth who came on Education Day, and enjoyed Planting Dreams with Kamut® Ancient Knorasan Wheat with the adults, as well as gifting many youth Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. As my bio says, on the National Heirloom expo Speaker page, National Heirloom expo Speaker page "Through popularizing seeing ancient wheat and heirloom seeds as teachers, he aims to cultivate a grassroots movement that outgrows GMOs and returns our beat with nature." This Plant Your Dream Blog is an unabashed thank you to the generosity of Dr Robert Quinn and his Kamut International family that supported my Plant Your Dream Projects in 2012 and 2013. My constant companion on the majority of my campaigns the last number of years has been the simple ancient grain of wheat. I have been writing about ancient wheat for more than a decade, but had it not been for the visionary farmer Robert Quinn, who brought this ancient grain of Khorasan wheat into my life. Robert, a most generous man, turned a handful of this ancient grain into what is now thousands od acres of Kamut® khorasan wheat. From his sponsorship of Organic farming research, to providing an important nutritional adjunct for athletes. Kamut® ancient Khorasan wheat is turned now into many products, some that we feature in our home kitchen. This ancient grain is now supporting the livelihood of an increasing number of organic non GMO farmers, and is a big inspiration behind what I mean when I say, "Grow A Healthier Pizza."

This pre-teen was all smiles at Education Day at the National Heirloom Expo Santa Rosa. Her dad was a teacher at a local school. The kids were already growing grains in their school garden. This chapter from the forthcoming book talks about my relationship with the ancient grain of Khorasan wheat that has been preserved and brought to the marketplace under the name Kamut© brand. The purpose of this brand is to preserve the integrity of the growing process that upholds a standard of both organic and non-genetically modified.
To lose the integrity of our heirloom seeds, seeds that have existed in their original form, is to lose the natural course of evolution. My own position is that GMOs need to be banned. Heirloom seeds, including Kamut® brand, hold the history of biodiverse cultures. We lose our the biodiversity of cultures when we attempt to co-exist with GMO seeds. GMO seeds contaminate the seed supply.
The inherent Intelligence of the seed
I believe there is an inherent intelligence in the seed. This intelligence is in the human seed as well as the seed of plants that are here to teach us how to live in harmony with the earth.

ALLERGIES TO WHEAT
Kamut® Khorasan Wheat is the real "Dough". What does this mean? In 2013 contaminated wheat grow with GMO Seeds showed up in the field. The immediate response from wheat buyers was to reject this US wheat. This is only the tip of the iceberg as far as economic losses due to more quality Modern Wheat in our food supply. The health expense that traces to modern growing practices is enormous. That is why I say, for anyone looking for value in their health dollar spent toward good nutrition, go with the ancient grains. I believe that there is a natural response in the body that rejects and creates inflammatory responses when the body is given food long term that is not food as nature intended. This is one of the teachings that this ancient grain of khorasan wheat brings us today. Dr. Robert Quinn, has found in research that many healthy people can eat Kamut® brand ancient wheat, even though they have sensitivities to modern wheat.

HERE IS SOME OF THE RESEARCH AS REPORTED ON THE KAMUT INTERNATIONAL SITE:
The 1st observation: An ever increasing number of people can no longer enjoy eating modern wheat as a staple in their diets because of some type of sensitivity or malady caused by consuming wheat.
The 2nd observation: Over the past 25 years many KAMUT® Brand grain customers have told us countless encouraging anecdotal stories. The problems they experienced after eating modern wheat simply did not occur when they ate KAMUT® Brand ancient wheat products. These reports continue to increase as the number and availability of KAMUT® Brand products on the market continues to grow.
2. CLINICAL OBSERVATIONS AND A STUDY OF THOSE WITH MODERN WHEAT SENSITIVITIES
Many clinical observations, especially by naturopathic doctors, and at least one clinical double blind study in 1991, have added to these consumer testimonials. This clinical study was conducted over a six month period by the International Food Allergy Association under the direction of its president, Dr. Eileen Yoder, PhD. Her results documented that in her tests of 100 people suffering from significant wheat sensitivities; nearly 70% showed a lower test score for KAMUT® Brand wheat than they did for modern wheat. A subset of 10 out of the 100 who had significant problems eating modern wheat were then challenged with a diet of KAMUT® Brand products. Again seven out of the 10 had either no reactions or a very mild reaction. The results of these studies led the author to conclude, “KAMUT® (brand products) can be an excellent substitution for common (modern) wheat if eaten on a rotational basis.” This report substantiated the anecdotal reports we had been hearing for years. Unfortunately Dr. Yoder was seriously injured in a car accident shortly after finishing her report which prevented her from preparing a manuscript for publication.
3. OBSERVATIONS AND EXPERIENCES OF THOSE WHO ARE HEALTHY AND HAVE NO SENSITIVITIES TO MODERN WHEAT
It is not only those suffering with sensitivities or health problems that have experienced positive results eating KAMUT® Brand products. On the opposite side of the spectrum, very healthy and fit professional and amateur athletes who know of no sensitivities or other problems related to eating modern wheat have reported enhanced athletic performance and quicker recovery after strenuous workouts when they have integrated KAMUT® Brand products into their diets. We have already seen at least four major soccer teams in Italy replacing some or all of a modern wheat diet with a diet of KAMUT® Brand foods. There are also reports from many countries that those training for and participating in marathons and triathlons as well as a myriad of other endurance sports feel a difference in their training and performance when they are eating a KAMUT® Brand wheat based diet.

IS THE PROBLEM WITH MODERN WHEAT THAT HAS BEEN MODIFIED AND GENETICALLY ALTERED? I BELIEVE SO.
Many of the problems with modern wheat tells us that gluten and other factors in the wheat are the problem. I do not believe that the problem is gluten per se. I believe the problem is that wheat has been has been manipulated and genetically modified.
It is the altering of the ancient wheat, once called the staff of life, that is the problem. Ancient wheat has come to teach us these lessons now.

GRINDING ANCIENT WHEAT INTO FRESH MILLED FLOUR
This is Gere Jettle, founder of Baker Creed Heirloom Seeds with Leslie (that's me!) doing one of my big Aha Grow A Healthier Pizza Projects, the grinding of Ancient Kamut® khorasan wheat into fresh milled flour. This was an activity we did all year long. The grinding of wheat is an attention grabber and fun project to do with youth and adults.. nadine, my sweetheart and I did this at the Del Mar County Fair in June and in September at the National Heirloom Expo. I also did this in the classroom at Hami High Los Angeles and at their Science Fair in May.

The beginning of my Spring campaign this year begins at the Natural Product Expo West March 6-9, 2014, and the following week at the Permaculture Voice Conference Southern California in Temecula, March 13-16. The Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Company will be a presence at the Permaculture Voices event. I will support their presence with my activities. I am part of the press corps at the Natural Product Expo West and here I will give away the Kamut© brand Knorasan wheat seed packets, as well as launch my 2014 Blog Campaigns.

The kickoff event of #ExpoWest for me is the Organic Farming Research Foundation Luncheon that happens on the Thursday of the show. This is a not to be missed networking event. I am filled with gratitude for the delightful reception and welcoming that the OFRF has given me over the years. I will be culling through my galleries for Kamut® grains we have grown here at home in SoCal in our experimental projects, as well as photos of foods from local Organic Farmers. The Return of Ralph Bronner of Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps to #ExpoWest One of my delights of the National Natural Products Expo West 2013 was seeing and having a brief visit with Ralph Bronner. I encourage everyone to watch Dr. Bronner's Magic Soapbox on Netflix, or get a copy. This tells some of the story of Ralph Bronner and his dad Emanuel Bronner, who inspired many of the Fair Trade and Humaniarian ideas being carried out by the company that gave to pass Prop I-522 in Washington State. David Bronner, president of the company and his brother Michael Bronner are a constant inspiration to me. I have a dream that starting in 2014 I will develop a poetry reading that combines some of my own writings with the Writings from The Moral ABC book of Emanual Bronner (1908-1997).

What is still unclear to most people, is that Uncle Sam is in the farm bed with GMO Foods. Many others are not aware that that GMO Foods are unhealthy.

ENTERING PLANT PARENTHOOD
There is much to gain through growing seeds and plants. I call this Plant Plarenthood. As we grow seeds, not only do we parent plants, but plants help reparent us.
How do we transition from where we are now to where we need to go?
Much of my "field work" in 2013, involved bringing into form the Art Work to help Reform Food. My intent in 2014 will be to further assemble this Art Work into an online book to begin with, called "Grow A Healthier Pizza!"

Campaign Origins
The Campaign to Grow A Healthier Pizza originated when two seeds, Kamut© brand and a seed packet of San Marzano Baker Creek Heirloom seeds, came into my life while working on the Prop 37 CA Label GMOs Campaign. What do you do with ancient wheat and tomatoes frequently used as pizza sauce? Grow A Healthier Pizza! The campaign gained form when I heard Deborah Szekely speak in May 2012 at Rancho La Puerta. She was up in arms that congress had DE CLARED that two ounces of tomato sauce defined pizza as a vegetable. So if Congress was going to do that, We the People were going to Grow A Healthier Pizza.

DR WILEY AND THE POISON SQUAD
From Dr. Wiley, who originated the idea the evolved into the FDA, I adapted the idea of a Poison Squad to my project called, "The Enchanted Garden Pantry" and the "Organic Squad." Dr. Wiley came up with the original idea that he would test junk food on volunteers and write up the results. In my adaptation, I asked teens at Hami High to join the Organic Squad and test test what Organic foods they liked. This was a big hit.
WORKING WITH YOUTH IN THE CLASSROOM AS UNCLE LESLIE
for a number of years now, I have had the opportunity to work with youth in the classroom of my niece Eva Becker, a Biology teacher at Hamilton High School. This has been my laboratory. Each time I have taught there, I have brought organic food to the classroom. Many times I have asked the youth to plant dreams with seeds of ancient Khorasan wheat. My personal position is that we need a Grass Roots movement, an enormous shift in consciousness. I see GMOs a a symptom of our lost beat with nature.
We have lost our contact with nature itself and the way seeds grow.
A few of the highlights of my 2013 Campaign included further developing a literal Pizza Box as container to share the seed teachings.

I am holding packets of different kinds of Baker Creek Heirloom corn--diverse corn varieties--that are GMO free. More and more varieties of these diverse corn seeds, that hold the wisdom and intelligence of cultures are becoming contaminated by GMO Corn seeds and no longer grow true to their ancient type. This is what the indigenous people of the world are screaming about. They are losing their Sacred Seeds. We are all losing our Sacred Seed by not hearing the screaming.

I was active in the San Diego Marches Against Monsanto in 2013. I spoke at the Fall Rally. I do believe that these Marches and the Labeling GMO Campaigns are helping bring in a new awareness that something is in our food called a GMO, and further that someone is spending a lot of money to keep labeling GMO's out of more public awareness.
I agree with Jeffrey M. Smith that we are creating a Tipping point where GMO foods will be rejected; however, this is not my end goal. My end goal is to create more Eminent Gardeners, to return America The Beautiful, to help create the awareness that there is something in the original seeds and these heirloom varieties that must be preserved if we as a human species are to thrive and return an Enchanted Garden to earth.
Putting all our efforts and energies toward Labeling and Marching Against Monsanto may not be enough to create the shift that is needed.
The End Goal is the Shift in Consciousness and this will come as more and more people regain their beat with nature. This goal is increasingly difficult as more and more of our youth and adults are swept up in the Computer Revolution that takes us farther and farther from natural evolution.
My concerns that that even if we win the fight, we will not have outgrown our predicament, our divorce from nature. Government must return to the people and this will happen as local growing of food, as well as organic farming methods that precedent in the American consciousness.
We need more and more farmers growing food. We need more and more gardeners. We need more and more people voting with their dollars because they recognize that Food Reform is needed. This will come out of the Marriage of Uncle Sam to Anti-GMO thinking.
The Agricultural system as we know it is busted. We need a nation of eminent gardeners.
In November, I was privileged to attend a convergence of Permaculture devotees. These is a movement of youth and adults who are finding ways to build and develop humanity in harmony with cultural laws that are permanent--in other words, have roots with a healthy past, present, and future for doing things.

Taking Kamut® Khorasan wheat across the border
In 2012, I first brought grains of Kamut® Khorasan wheat to Tecate, Mexico. Tecate is the home of Rancho La Puerta, the Number One destination spa. Many people of high self esteem, who are interested in health, visit this elegant environment that was inspired by my teachers Edmond Bordeaux Szekely and Deborah Szekely.

It was Edmond Bordeaux Szekely who first introduced me to the power of the Ancient wheat berry. in the early days of the ranch, they grew their own wheat and made their own bread. It is my deepest seed dream to again see a loaf of bread grown at the Ranch Farm. in 2013, out of seed I left in 2012, the first field of Kamut© brand produced a solid row of the ancient grain. This was uplifting to my soul.
One of my favorite quotes from Edmond Bordeaux Szekely is this one that appears in the book about Zarathustra:

HOME SWEET HOME
This is a photo taken in December 2013. It expresses my hopes and dreams for 2014. Compost building and front of the house foundations repairs have been big focuses during the year. Layers of manure went to one of our favorite orange trees thanks to housemate Ken Small. In the history of the house, we have never had blooms on the orange tree in December, and these are happening at the same time that the Spring Harvest crop is still ripening. We will have a double harvest of oranges in 2014.
RE-INVENTING OUR HOME COMMUNITY NOW
Finding contentment and peace at home has never been easy for me. I manage a household of eight and this alone could be a full time job.
My goal through the first months of 2014 will be to help in the re-invention of our community that I call the Enchanted Garden Intentional Community. The power of re-establishing my home base after two years of uphill climb with Prop 37 in 2012, and then learning how to living in balance at age 66, are among my most different challenges. I am most grateful for the support of good housemates and counselors as I take on keys to my success at home.
For five months, in 2013, I had what I am calling a health storm, I look more deeply at this in the section below called Rekindling of Faith.
ESTABLISHING REFINEMENTS TO THE ENCHANTED GARDEN FOOD PANTRY AT THE ENCHANTED GARDEN INTENTIONAL COMMUNITY, AROSA STREET
Nadine Favorite Ingredients are the products that I include in our Enchanted Garden Pantry. At various holidays at home, a number of the amen in our community go way out with holiday treats and dinners. Nadine's Healthier Pizzeria is a name for what we do at home when she works with perfecting her own recipes with Kamut ® that is works into pizza dough. We are always adding new favorite ingredients that include products from Eden Foods, Bragg's Live Foods, and others we discover in our journeys to the Natural Product Expo West.

MY TOWER GARDEN EXPERIENCES
Early in 2013, I was given a Tower Garden to use by my friend Lurrae Lupone who asked me to see how I liked it. I soon began to grow Healthier Pizza Fixings, including Kamut© ancient wheat and tomatoes. in April 2013, I attended the Southern California meeting of the group that is promoting the Tower Garden.
I met the inventor Tim Blank. We had a fabulous connection.
I was playing with the idea that I would promote the growth of one half million of these Tower Gardens, as a way to foster my own idea that more people need to grow their own food. I brought Tim some of my results, grains of wheat that had grown this space ace aeroponic system.
I entered my relationship with growing food in the Tower Garden with an open mind. I am a devotee to the soil, and I see the soil as the medium for growing healthy people. I thought that I could use the Tower Garden as a means to an end, getting more people into growing food in both the Tower Garden and in Containers in soil.
i discovered some amazing things. Wheat will produce seeds to the next generation in the Tower Garden.
I was also growing seeds in wine barrels at the same time.
The grass of the wheat berries grown in the Tower Garden made fabulous sweet Kamut© Grass that we juiced. This was very exciting.
When, I attempted to respout the finished kernels of wheat, I placed about 90 kernels in one jar, 90 that had grown in the wine barrels, and 90 of original Kamut© in another jar.
I was able to get one of the 90 seeds to sprout, and about four of the seeds from the wine barrel.
The control group of seeds of original Kamut nearly all sprouted.
I am not sure what this all means, other than wheat original grown in Montana, the source of the Kamut© is pretty particular about its growing conditions.
I have a dream that Kamut© brand can be acclimated to other climates such as Southern California and Mexico. Of course, this would take a lot of development that I would turn over to Dr. Robert Quinn and his allies. They have strict standards for growing the wheat commercially under the Kamut© khorasan wheat banner.
Conclusions of the Tower Garden Experiment
I am still working on Tower Garden experiments growing Khorasan wheat.
At the National Heirloom Expo September 2013, I had the opportunity to ask numbers of soil enthusiasts what they thought of growing food out of soil. one of the awarenesses that I gleaned was that the quality of different herbs and their effects differ highly according to the minerals that are in the soil. In other words, a different balance will produce different herbal health influences.
I also had a visit from a wheat grass growing expert who grows thousands of trays of wheatgrass commercially. It takes a very unique seed to adapt to this commercial growing process. His experience was that wheat grown hydroponically was not as healthy.
I sense that wheat--the staff of life--will reproduce viable seeds if the unique micro nutrients that wheat requires are in the soil to begin with. I have not yet been satisfied that the Tower Tonic provided with the Tower Garden has the balance to produce viable seeds.

REKINDLING OF FAITH
2013 was a year of great learning, and coming to terms with the vulnerability of my own body as well as our earth to survive and thrive.
Leaving Alvarado Hospital in June 2013. I had a Kidney Stone procedure. The pain as well as the recovery was intense.
I spent three months in close encounters with the conventional medical system during summer,, and a have spent a number of months realigning my own immune system with the opportunity to be a Wellness Warrior at 66. I have a long way to go.
In September, I fulfilled a commitment to teach at the National Heirloom Expo, and then in November to establish a Sacred Seed Presence at the Pacific Symposium where a container of ancient grass growing and my Art Graphic for 2012-2013-2014 adored the podium.
I drove to Santa Rosa from San Diego, a journey of 1600 miles round trip in my 68 VW van by myself, challenging personal limits.
It is the continuing of support from my sponsors and those who I meet along the Journey that compels me to overcome and model what it means to be a fully human and striving to help humanity at a time when our earth deeply needs us all.

ANGELS AMONG US KATRINA FREY OF THE FREY WINERY
I had a health storm in 2013, health problems that added up to five months of 2013. There was a big question in my mind if I could get to the National Heirloom Expo (September 9-10-11 in 2014). Connection the dots, I know see this as part of my Seed Dream for Getting Hip. Through My Getting Hip Replacements in 1975 and Hip Revisions in 2000-2001, I would contribute to Healthcare in America getting Hip to being all it could be. In July I had a kidney stone intervention at the Alvarado Hospital in San Diego.
This was about six weeks before the 2013 National Heirloom Expo. I still may not fully recovered with my Encounters with Pharma Drugs during that period that left me confused and split focused. Part of what kept me going, was a vision that I wanted to return again to the Frey Vineyard in 2014, as well as see the Petaluma Seed Bank. I reached out to Katrina Frey when I was still on vapors. It was her uplift financially, and then an uplift from Patricia Bragg, that helped me see my way to the National Heirloom Expo. Finally getting there is a story I want to tell under the heading The Rekindling of Faith.
Katrina Frey and the Frey family deserve our support. There are many brothers and a number of sisters in this family that caretake more than 1000 acres in the Redwood Valley.
I have many dreams that I have for the Frey Family.
They grow grains in between the fields of grapes in winter and spring. I wonder if Kamut® ancient Khorasan wheat can acclimate to that Northern California climate? I gave seeds to brother Luke Frey, a master of Biodynamic agriculture, when I visited following the National Heirloom Expo.
There are other Kamut® ancient grains that need to go up there for the Vineyard.

Do Cows really need antibiotics to be well?
One of the most powerful experiences of my year was at the Frey Vineyard spending time with this cow and her caretakers, Luke Frey and his apprentices. I got a report from an apprentice that in nine months of service, the three cows were in optimal health. I do not believe that cows and other animals need antibiotics. I am grateful to be seeing some progress made on the front to lessen them as decrees by the FDA. I believe Kamut® ancient khorasan wheat would be an important adjunct to the healthy diet of animals. I would like to see the 4H Clubs becoming aware of this.

Patricia raises chickens at her Mendocina Organic Farm. I have enjoyed feeding the chickens Kamut® ancient Khorasan wheat. I believe that growing this into grass would be a great health asset for chicken growers who want the best for their eggs.
Sampling Bragg and Eden Foods at the Hillcrest Farmers' Market
We are graced in San Diego to have abundance of locally grown organic food at our Farmers' Markets. I show up at the Hillcrest Farmers' Market each Sunday when I am in town to spend time with J.R. Organics, and some of the other vendors. There are many days that I spend an extraordinary time at the computer. Interacting with those who come to shop is a healing experience both for them and myself.
