Organic Laundry Detergent

I was very pleased to find this non-toxic laundry detergent in my local Whole Foods Market! This goes one big step beyond the other non-toxic laundry detergents I have used in that almost all of the ingredients are ORGANIC!

Whole Foods Market Organic Green Mission liquid laundry detergent

My laundry products: energy and water saving front loading washer, organic liquid laundry detergent, baking soda as laundry booster/deodorizer, hydrogen peroxide to break down stains, apple cider vinegar in rinse to get out any remaining soap residues and also serves as a mild astringent to keep mold from growing in the washer.

The Whole Foods GREEN MISSION Organic Laundry Detergent  label reads as follows:

No chlorine, phosphates, or petrochemicals. USDA Organic. Hypo-allergenic, unscented. 3X concentration. Safe for septic and grey water systems. (Greywater systems utilize recycled water for irrigation) not tested on animals. biodegradable. low-sudsing formula. for top loading or front loading washers.

Full ingredient declaration:

Aqua (Filtered water), sapindus mukorossi (organic soap nuts), saponified cocos nucifer oil (saponified organic coconut oil), aloe barbadensis (organic aloe vera leaf juice powder), sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sodium carbonate, xanthan gum, acacia senegal (organic gum arabic), cyamopsis tetragonolobus gum (organic guar gum), sea salt, organic glycerin, quillaia saponaria (organic soap bark)

USDA Organic certification requires that at least 95% of ingredients listed must be organic; of the 5% or less non-organic ingredients, none can be GMO'd (genetically engineered).

I looked up the ingredients to find out what they are:

sapindus mukorossi (organic soap nuts): Sapindus mukorossi is a deciduous tree found wild in north India that produces fruit that sells as "soap nuts". The fruit has a high content of saponin, a natural detergent commonly used for cleaning

saponified cocos nucifer oil (saponified organic coconut oil): Coconut Oil is made by squeezing the copra (dried coconut flesh) until the oil comes out. Saponified coconut oil is added to cleaning agents to create lather.

aloe barbadensis (organic aloe vera leaf juice powder):
The Aloe barbadensis leaf, or aloe vera as it is more commonly known, can be crushed down to form a liquid. Aloe vera also contains natural occurring saponins, added to laundry products to create lather. It also has antiseptic qualities

sodium bicarbonate: Sodium bicarbonate is the scientific term for baking soda; it is a powerful odor eliminator and boosts the cleaning power of the laundry detergent

(This in itself is an interesting article—you can make your own laundry detergent cheaply and easily)

sodium carbonate: Sodium carbonate is a sodium salt of carbonic acid and usually comes in the form of a white crystalline powder. It can be extracted from the ashes of many plants, which is why it is also known as soda ash or washing soda. In laundry detergents, it works as a water softener and it is good at getting grease, oil and alcohol stains out of clothing.

xanthan gum: is a polysaccharide secreted by the bacterium Xanthomonas campestris and is used as a stabilizer in products to prevent ingredients from separating

acacia senegal (organic gum arabic):
Acacia Senegal is a small deciduous tree native to semi-desert regions of Sub-Saharan Africa, as well as Oman, Pakistan, and northwestern India. The sap of the tree, known as gum arabic, is used to bind together the different components in the product. Gum arabic also reduces the surface tension in liquids; in laundry products, a reduction in the surface tension of water allows the water to more readily soak into pores and soiled areas of clothing, making it a more effective cleaning agent.

cyamopsis tetragonolobus gum (organic guar gum): is a drought-tolerant legume grown for forage and for its seed which yields a gum used as a thickening agent. About 80% of world production occurs in India and Pakistan.

organic glycerin: Glycerin is a thick colorless liquid that is used in soaps and other products; it absorbs water, seals in moisture, and soothes irritated skin. It is added to liquid soaps to keep the liquid from solidifying over time.

quillaia saponaria (organic soap bark): also known as the soap bark tree or Soapbark, is an evergreen tree in native to warm temperate central Chile. The inner bark of the tree is reduced to powder; it forms a lather when mixed with water due to the presence of glucoside saponin, also called quillaia saponin.
