Subject: "food guide for North American vegetarians"

"Greetings!

I am very interested in receiving more understanding in the following ADA position regarding a couple dietary concerns for vegetarians.

In 'A new food guide for North American vegetarians.'

The 'specific guidelines for meeting needs for vitamins B-12 and D' include a table that 'shows modifications in food group servings for different age groups' including 'for children'. The age range for 'child' is stated as '4 - 8 years'. Is it reasonable to conclude that children under the age of four generally should not be restricted to a
vegetarian diet?

Also under 'Special considerations for vegetarians' it says that 'Unsupplemented vegan diets do not provide vitamin B-12'. Isn't this an indication that vegan diets do not completely meet the nutritional needs of a human being?

Again in this same section 'Dairy products and eggs supply vitamin B-12; however, depending on food choices, some lacto-ovo-vegetarians may have inadequate intakes as well.' Does ADA have any information indicating that animal nutrition is a factor in the nutritional adequacy of animal
products?

Thank you for your support. I am looking forward to hearing from you!

Chef Jem"

Looks like I will have to try another approach for getting answers to my questions, all of which were apparently dismissed even though they were devoid of "individual health concerns".

Why am I not surprised to get this reply?

Cheers!

Chef Jem
