'Abbas Urges Gaza Revolt For the first time Palestinian leader Mahmoud 'Abbas has called on the people of Gaza to ouster Hamas. He suggested that while he and his team are doing the impossible in "ending the Israeli occupation," there must also be a move to rid Gaza of Hamas. The Islamist movement took full control of Gaza in June following several days of violent confrontations with fighters from 'Abbas' Fatah. 'Abbas' call came in the week Hamas men fired on protestors whom had gathered in their tens of thousands to mark the third anniversary of the death of Yassir Arafat.   TV Stations Return in Pakistan as Negroponte Visits The Pakistani authorities have allowed at least two private television channels to resume broadcasts, despite the state of emergency that remains in place. Virtually all private electronic media was shut down when President Pervez Musharraf declared emergency rule two weeks ago. The small change in policy on Thursday came the day before top United States State Department official John Negroponte arrives in Islamabad. Meanwhile, two of Musharraf's fiercest political opponents, former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, have begun talks about working together ahead of the parliamentary elections slated for January. If the two pool their resources they should win a majority of seats in parliament, according to opinion polls.   Why a Parliament is Important for Jordan [Amman] As the clock ticks towards the legislative elections in Jordan, questions are surfacing in the conservative kingdom over the value of taking part in elections that will deliver a lower house of parliament that has little to say regarding internal affairs, and next to nothing on foreign policy. According to the constitution, the lower house of parliament is part of the legislative authority, along with the senate, which is appointed directly by the king. Unlike most democratic countries in the world, the elected members of the parliament do not form the government: this right remains within the grip of the king, also in accordance with the constitution. The house has a clear mandate: to endorse legislation and international agreements. Other tasks include scrutinizing the activities of the executive authority, i.e., the government.
