My vote is for you to buy a new computer. In addition I think for $200 you should accept the offer and have a new hard drive installed to save your computer.

Hopefully with technical support you should be able to save all of your work. Your hard drive should be removed and a computer technician perhaps your friend can analyze if it has corrupt files and save those that don't.

One remedy my son often uses for his computers is vacuuming. He keeps the computer intact just takes off the cover and carefully vacuums everything. Dust can be an enemy and culprit for many problems. He does this about once a month. You would be surprised in the cleanest homes how much dust there could be inside your computer. After finishing this he brushes carefully some parts and puts the cover back on. It usually solves the problem of whatever computer noises or groans it had been making. He also once a week or every 2 weeks scans the computer a process that takes about hour for prevention of future problems. Sometimes he does a program that scans the computer overnight going through each and every file and document you have. It will usually find several bad files and remove them or restore them.

He always gives me the lecture about how the worksstation or workspace should be very clean; no papers near the computer fan as it will cause the computer to overheat and have to work too hard. I keep all sorts of papers (like bills I want to dispute, letters I want to write a reply to, invitations I plan to add to my calendar, addresses, phone numbers etc.) next to the computer and deserve to hear this nag.

Sometimes a computer just needs a new fan. This small inexpensive part has an important function; if the fan breaks down your computer will overheat and possible die. Noises can be a warning that the fan is not working properly. It is worth checking out.
