Quinine has been pulled from OTC 5 different times.

The last time quinine was pulled, was after pfizer pharmaceutical comapny developed and launched their two chemical synthetic versions of quinine. The synthetic quinine has been proven to be much less effective than the natural quinine.

I do not believe it was a coincidence that the more effective real quinine disappeared from over the counter after pfizer developed their synthetic quinine.
