Yes, Kermit, we do choose our parts, our roles in God's play called Life.

How we choose to play our part is up to us, and how we choose our part we play also up to us... Duh... :-)

So, even better than choosing wisely, choose Divinely. Follow God's path, and no matter what happens, no matter what!, the rewards will justify the hardships.
