If you are interested in seeing news on the newest giant panda at the San Diego Zoo please go here for that information. Otherwise please read on!
Young pandas are known to be very gentle and friendly. They are like your house pet (puppy), they love to have their back scratched.
After a cub is born, the mother quickly directs the newborn to her nipples to drink her milk. When a baby panda is hungry again it will cry like a human baby. The cub may cry for the mothers milk as often as twelve (12) times a day. With the mothers huge paw she could cover her baby.
The cub is born with little white fur on its pink skin. The cubs' skin will start to turn gray in the areas where the black hair will eventually start to grow. The black markings will show up in one area at a time, within a month it will have black ears, eye patches, legs and shoulder band just like mom. The mom rarely leaves her baby out of her arms. She holds and hugs the baby against her warm body, licks it clean and protects it from harm. When she leaves her hideaway, she carries the baby with her, if she has twins she will carry one in her mouth and the other in her paw.
At about six to eight weeks of age the cub will open its eyes and first milk teeth will begin to appear. The cub becomes mobile at approximately 3 months of age and as the cub gets stronger, it will climb on the mothers back. The mother will play at times with the little cub by tossing it back and forth between her paws, rolling the cub around or wrestling with it.
