I have had mirena for a year now. I decided to get it after nearly dying for the second time giving birth. My husband and I made a decision not to have anymore children for a long time. Neither one of us wanted to be "fixed", so we saw this as our best option. It has enabled us to have a completely spontaneous sex life without worrying about pregnancy. It has also eliminated my periods (which I think is the BEST benefit)!. However........over the last 12 months, I have noticed some serious changes in my body. I have gained exactly 60 pounds, lost a significant amount of hair, and have have bouts of extreme depression. I was at a point this past summer where I just wanted to die. I have never had problems with my mental health before. Since having Mirena inserted, my appetite has skyrocketed and my energy level has plummeted, thus resulting in the mind- boggling weight gain. I also retain a lot of water. My feet and legs swell on a daily basis. Not just a bit, either. I want to have mirena removed! I am interested in hearing whether or not anyone else out there has suffered from these extreme symptoms. I want to know that I am not insane, and that this problem is real.
