Here's some verses I keep in mind whenever the issue comes up about whether studying prophecy is a worthwhile pursuit for Christians:

2 Thessalonians 2:1 Now regarding the arrival of our Lord Jesus Christ and our being gathered to be with him, we ask you, brothers and sisters, 2:2 not to be easily shaken from your composure or disturbed by any kind of spirit or message or letter allegedly from us, to the effect that the day of the Lord is already here. 2:3 Let no one deceive you in any way...
Revelation 1:1 The revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave him to show his servants what must happen very soon. He made it clear by sending his angel to his servant John, 1:2 who then testified to everything that he saw concerning the word of God and the testimony about Jesus Christ. 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy aloud, and blessed are those who hear and obey the things written in it, because the time is near!

Personally, I think it's a good idea to reach for any blessings I can get! But even in Paul's day it was important to know prophecy (as well as every other scripture) to avoid being deceived. We all have different areas of interest, and prophecy has always been one of my favorites. It can serve as motivation for holy living as well as a source of excitement for the future and of comfort during rough times.
