- Can I just use the egg's shell and membrane (instead of the entire egg)?

Yes. The calcium carbonate from the shell is all we want. It is the electrically conductive part.

- The cooper plate should be wet or dry?

I have never tried it wet. Only dry.
This is all very experimental so try and see what works for you.
