Hello Sarah,
I have not seen the CNN piece, so I can't comment on it first hand. If I saw a news clip showing kids in Iran buying Valentine gifts, I probably wouldn't really have thought anything much about it, except maybe a brief "Aw, thats sweet", I certainly would not have thought them evil or lacking in morals. I would imagine most of the Western world would have thought similar. We (a general "we") LIKE to see things being westernized, different cultures freak us out, especially Islamic culture. (again I am making a general statement and for sure this view is not shared by everyone, myself included) Though you would have rather have seen a piece about Muslims abstaining from the holiday, sadly I'm sure that would have provoked the opposite reaction you would desire, people would have thought "Ooo, those horrible Muslims, not even letting their children celebrate Valentines day!" They were probably trying to show a "kinder, gentler" more WESTERN Muslim to the world. *sigh*
I will be the first to admit that there is a great deal I dislike about Islamic culture, mostly centered aroud women's rights, but I will also admit that there is a great deal I do not understand about it as well. Did CNN drop the ball on educating us on a facet of the culture, no doubt, but sadly in todays world it seems a lot of people are just not ready, or willing, to see with different eyes.
Thank you for your viewpoint, as a Muslim, on the news piece, very interesting to see the view of a persons who's culture was being shown and the reaction to what we would have saw as a "good thing"

Laura
