The following link is a collection of Old Indian Legends and several are about Iktomi who is the spider-trickster. I thought that you might be interested in reading more about spiders in the Native American culture.

Also... in Mircea Eliade's book 'Shamanism', he discusses the mythology of the first shaman and it involves a spider bite. I don't recall which indigenous culture this story is from, but you might be interested in reading about that as well.
