Not true. I went on the McDougall diet (he is referenced a couple of times in your post) and all it got me was fat and diabetes. I did this after being diagnosed with prostate cancer for which I have never been medically treated.
I lowered my triglycerides from about 370 down to 60 in six weeks. I also lowered my cholesterol level form 285 down to 215 in the same period of time. How? By limiting carbohydrate intake to 15 grams per meal for a total of 45 grams per day - or less. This is a diet that is promoted by the Virginia Mason Clinic in Seattle and others have seen similar results. Virginia Mason is internationally recognized and has been doing diabetes research since 1923.
If you wish to be healthy, do what our pre-agriculture ancestors did. Walked a lot and ate mostly meat and fat and some tubers along with a little fruit and nuts. Eskimos live primarily on meat and fish and don't get diabetes or heart disease.
I threw away my McDougall books years ago.
