The joint pain started about 3-4 months after I had it inserted. It came on all of a sudden, one morning I woke up and my right shoulder and elbow hurt and that continued for a few days. Then it went to my wrist and fingers. From there it depended on the day, but most days it was something that hurt for varying lengths of time -sometimes it was my ankle or knee, other days my wrist, elbow or shoulder or some combination of the joints. But at least 2 of my fingers hurt almost daily from the onset of the symptoms to the removal of my IUD. After removal of the Mirena, my pain began to disappear relatively quickly.

All pain was usually worse in the morning and better throughout the day and then worse again at night. Some days I had very little pain and others it was very painful. I didn't experience any numbness or itching, but I did have swelling in my fingers a lot, and twice that I remember I had some swelling in my ankle.

It's hard to know what to do, but having it removed for me seemed to be the easiest next step since various blood tests all came back normal. I figured it wouldn't hurt to have it removed, and if it ended up helping then what an easy fix.

If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask me, it's the only reason I return to this site. I want to share my experience so others can possibly avoid long bouts of pain and worry, it's hard on you emotionally as well as physically when Drs. can't seem to figure out what is wrong with you.

Please let me know how it goes if you do have it removed, I'm curious to learn if others cured their pain by removing it. Good luck.
