I am sorry to hear of your medical condition. Many of my relatives are also suffering from sciatica. I think we are all in the same age group. Sciatica can be very painful.
As Harpo would say exercise can be the best pain relief. I would add perhaps physical therapy. It is suggested to exercise two times a day, as painful as that sounds. Other suggestions are to try to minimize everyday stress on your lower back. As Katie, the ballet dancer in my family, would say, posture is really important, especially when you are sitting down working at the computer. Your back should be supported and you need to make sure you have the right kind of chair for that.
Also, you should try not to stand for long periods of time and be careful when you are lifting or gardening.
