I think part of this is that Americans are remarkably ignorant when it comes to the rest of the world.  They don't really think about the suffering of others, and how good it is here mainly because they don't even know the "others" exist.

To this day I am certain most Americans could not find Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, N Korea on a map if their lives depended on it.
