Blog: Drinking the Living Water
Hi there!
I haven't been able to frequent the boards as much as I'd like but I have been thinking about posting this message for some time, as people should be aware of both the good and the not-so-good of something before they try it.
Long term fasting is safe. I, and others are living proof of it. By long term, I mean, anything over 30 days. However there are some things everyone should be aware of.
1. A fast over 50 days (roughly) will result in hairloss. Considering the length of time you fast, I think, the more you lose. During my longest fast (145 days) I lost a lot of hair and eventually figured out it was due to the fast. I researched like crazy and was able to find much information on long term fasting and hair loss. Unfortunettly, I no longer have this information, but I've included an interesting site I found discussing the weight loss/hair loss factor.
http://lowcarbfriends.com/bbs/showthread.php?threadid=173469&perpage=30&pagen...
"When you loose weight rapidly you drop your estrogen levels rapidly When you are over weight your estrogen is very high. As estrogen drops your TOM can become irregular with spotting ect. and Hairloss can occur. The hormone changes weaken the hair follicals. If you have an underlying thyroid problem it can be worse. The good news as your estrogen levels drop so does your risk for cancer, breast and uterine. The hair loss slows down and eventually stops as your estrogen levels, level out if you will."
I had read before that not ingesting oils during a fast can result in hairloss. BUT while on a fast you shouldn't be ingesting oils or any protein, so if you're worreid about losing hair, perhaps fasting for 30 days, taking a break an dthen starting again, would be best for you.
After I ended my fast my hair came back in new growth, and even came in thicker. I already have thick hair so this wasn't the greatest thing, but it was also much healthier than before.
2. If you're fasting for weight loss, YOU CAN NOT GO BACK TO EATING THE WAY YOU WERE BEFORE!!!!! YOU WILL GAIN THE WEIGHT BACK. Fasting for weight loss should be the starting point of a forever change. A change in the way you eat and live. During your fast, educate yourself on healthy living and kno wthat when you end, the SAD is a thing of the past or an occasional vistor and I stress occasional.
I spoke with a friend of mine who expressed that he eats 80% living and 20% other. He's in great shape and is still able to get in some of that junk that's so hard to stay away from. Maybe be a kosher way to live...
3. Research. Research. Research. Know what you're doing before you do it. It's those who get involved in something and don't do there research, and then freak when something wierd happens, that gives a subject a bad name. Research the science and the testimonials. :)
That's all. I hope everyone is doing well and I hope to be joining you again soon!
Blessings!

I am just nearing 50 days (the end of the master cleanse for me) . It has been a great experience , met many sweet people on here. I feel great emotionally , it realy soothed me to cleanse . I come from the sad diet . I AM SO GLAD I went for the duration that I did . I will be moving to a high percentage of raw when this is complete. How long should I juice the oranges for ? Was thinking about a week perhaps. Then broth 5 days .. then resume eating again .
cheers ..:)

- Super post.... by kerminator

I have advocated and lived a 80 / 20 diet as the best of all worlds... Can check back on some of my diet device in former blog entries...
You are correct if someone goes back to whatever: then they never really repented or changed only delayed the process... Progress is made when one conceives if an idea to make a change; hopefully for the better... Then puts forth the effort which brings results... Results that they can live with??
The fast is and can be a positive part of your life... Not so sure about the real long over a week fast; but to each his / her own... Best of all to you...
Thank you for your posts... See Ya... Kermit

I add the amazing superfood Nature's First Food to my liquid fasts which insures my cells have all the nutrition they need while cleansing, and have not experienced any hair loss in all of this time. This amazing product has everything in it, including probiotics, sea veg, grasses, bg algae, spirulina, etc ...... so those key elements of cells are in full supply.

I find that very interesting. Have you experienced a huge weight loss during any fasts? Even though information I've read states that hair loss during fasts can be attributed to the lack of protein/oil, I'm wondering if the rapid weight loss/hair loss/ estrogen level connection is really the culprit.....

If you add protein to your fast, YOU ARE NOT FASTING. You're on a liquid diet and anything you read here or in juice fasting forums is not going to help you. They are two completely different processes.
The link I posted in my Warnings post should help explain the connection between rapid weight loss and hair loss. Evidentally this is common in all types of dieting. When you lose weight quickly, especially women, your estrogen levels have a hard time balancing and this results in hair loss.
Your hair will grow back but it's starting from new. It's going to take a while for you to have a full head of hair again. I'm sorry to say... My hairloss is just now starting to slow and I'm 60 days past my last fast. I also have naturally thick hair so I can spare a few strands...
How long have you been fasting?

I'm starting my fast tomorrow for 30 days. I found this protein supplement thats in liquid form, will that do? Im so scared because im already losing my hair and i would like to have it stop before it becomes too noticable! Will i lose any more hair on the fast if i just take daily vitamins or will the fast stop the hair loss? Im so terrified...the thought of having to wear a wig in highschool makes me shudder.

You are not fasting if you are ingesting protein. You're on a liquid diet and you really should look into resources on "liquid dieting".
It's also not a good idea, as I've mentioned to you before, to fast for 30 days at your age. Are you going to do an enema every day? How are you going to eliminate? If you don't eliminate every day, you can make yourself VERY, VERY sick and you'll be worse off than before. What are you going to do if you go through a detox crisis? Do you know how to tell if your going through detox if there's something wrong? How are you getting your juices?
Also, fasting for weight loss is something o.k. to do, AS LONG AS, it's the beginning of a forever change in your diet. Once you stop fasting, if you go back to your bad eating habits, I PROMISE YOU, you'll gain all the weight back, right away, PLUS MORE because your metabolism has slowed. It'll also tend to be a flabbier, jello-cellulite type fat, not the harder fat you currently carry.
If you are dealing with eating disorders, you need to address WHY you eat the way you do, why you think about your body so much and then work on changing it in your head. Fasting will just become another "purger" for you and the rest of your life you'll struggle with weight issues. Fix what's going on inside your head first, then fix what's happening on the outside.
I really hope you'll reconsider fasting for 30 days. I'm concerned that you're jumping into something you're unprepared for. For health and rejuvenation, try fasting one day a week. For weight loss, because of your eating disorder, work on the "whys" and eventually the weight will come off as you correct your habits.
Lovingly yours,
LW
