Joseph Campbell is famous in the year 2005 for his eloquent works and his phrase "follow your bliss.” This is a man who followed his heart’s passion and spent his life researching and meditating on the many, many myths from around the world—and then teaching and writing about them. For him, this was “following your bliss.” It was an act of love. That's as sweet as finding yourself in a one-car parade where you and your good friend are "Citizens of the Day."

I am finding myself on a path—-as many of us do-—that sometimes appears devoid of any seeming life ahead of me. It is as though I am wandering into nothing but pitch-black nothingness. I know that I’m moving, and it feels like I’m moving forward, but I still have no idea where I’m going, nor how I’m getting there.

The New Age movement talks about “living in the light,” about lightworkers, light beings, surrounding yourself in light, envisioning light—-lots and lots of light. I’m all in favor of that. As a matter of fact, light is good, and you can see a lot with it. But I’m a night kind of guy. I like the dark. I like the feeling you have when you don’t always know what’s in front of you or behind you or to your side—it’s a little eerie.

Perhaps I’m surrounded by “inner light” as I’m moving forward in the night, and perhaps that same “inner light” is permeating my being as I am moving forward-—blindly, it seems—-on the path of my life. But I still like the darkness. My dreams come to me in the dark of night, and they are a source of great mystery and joy. I know my life’s work is coming through the night, through darkness, for that is seeded with creativity and potential.

I recently awoke from one of those dreams and found myself inside of a morning filling my bedroom with creative inspirations that seemed to come from a place far, far away--a place other than Santa Monica, California, where my bed was located with me on top of it (please withhold all comments). I was inspired and all this great writing was finding its way onto paper. And so did these thoughts:

Listen to your heart. Where it delights, you shall go! Go into delight!

Go into delight! How wonderful! And, what a play on words, too. It’s like I’m hanging out with my homeboys and shout out to them as they’re heading home, “Go into da light, man!” Go into delight!

If you’re moving along in life on a path like mine-—filled with question marks, uncertainties, doubts and fears, and lots of strange-feeling pitfalls along the way-—going into delight feels like the best beacon out there. How can I go wrong if I go into delight? Why should I move towards something if there isn’t delight in it for me? Am I experiencing a life where I’m “following my bliss” if I’m not moving into delight? I think not.

There are two things that really move me in life. One: that feeling I get when I really “catch” the understanding of some thing, the “a-ha” feeling. It’s legendary, isn’t it? I mean that really, really deep “a-ha” that reduces my body weight from 169 to 0 pounds in a heartbeat. It’s like I’m nothing but spirit when I enter into those realizations.

The second is laughter. Laughter that comes from the core of my soul—-yes, not spirit, but soul-—also reduces my body weight from 169 pounds to zero. I dissolve into nothingness when I’m laughing from my soul. And I must admit, it’s like a great massage and luxurious bath all rolled into one.

Go into delight! Experiencing an “a-ha” and laughter are both realms of delight for me. Delight is also when I am with friends and really into my pleasure of their company: a bystander with “inner vision” would see all kinds of sparks and lightning bolts flying around our group, a lot of it being the zips and zings coming from my own delight.

Delight is also my experience when I’m immersed in creativity, such as in this moment of writing. Creativity for me is also in running, playing out in the ocean water, listening to some amazing Brazilian sounds. Running, playing, and listening are not idle amusements for me—-they are creative acts filled with delight! And, by golly, when I’m immersed in them, I am going into delight.

There’s nothing more flavorful in this life than to be immersed in it—-immersed in life, going fervently, and with flair, into delight.
