  • Addicted to sleeping pills   by  #25671     18 y     5,144       3 Messages Shown       Blog: Cleaning Up My Act
I've been struggling with these drugs for more than a year: bromazapam, zolpidem, rivotril, among others--I've forgotten the names. Last summer I tried to "taper off" by myself and got frustrated. Whenever I wouldn't take them, I would sleep just 1-2 hours a night, if at all, with nightmares and anxiety-ridden dreams. At one stretch I stayed awake for 5 miserable days before caving into a sleeping pill. Another time I stopped a couple days and was anxious and near tears, having nightmares during the brief times I could sleep, feeling depressed, and TALKING STUPID.

I read about sleeping pill addiciton on the Internet. Most sites said you shouldn't try to quit cold turkey, but taper off with help from a doctor. So I contacted a psychiatrist who told me the same, and referred me to another doctor, who also told me the same.

The funny thing is: they gave me MORE drugs in order to stop using drugs. I just followed their instructions: 2 different kinds of sleeping pill with an anti-depressent (first, Zoloft). I slept and slept and slept like a baby and nothing made me worry--Not smoking, drinking, sleeping around, or missing work. I took a tropical vacation in the hopes of mellowing out and cleaning up, but I just partied the whole time. And then the Zoloft kicked in and killed my sex drive. So they gave me Wellbutrin, which picked me up a bit and helped me quit smoking.

After 3 months of this program, I decided not to get my refills. That was about two weeks ago. The doctors had said it would take about 6 months but I feel ready now. Stopping Wellbutrin was no problem, but it's been tough trying to taper off the sleeping pills. I'm undaunted anyway. Being able to quit smoking so easily has boosted my confidence. We have a holiday coming up (Chinese New Year) and I'll get a week off work. I plan to fast and liver flush, and of course, will not be taking the pills at all during that time. I just want to get the poison OUT--out of my liver, my chemistry, my brain. I want to lie down and sleep naturally, not drug-induced.

**Don't knock the doctors: They know what they're doing and their program actually HELPED me, yes. I got the regular sleep I so badly needed along with a sense of peace and calm, enough so that I could think clearly again, and the Wellbutrin gave me a major boost to quit smoking. I just feel that with this vacation time approaching, it's an opportunity to tackle the problem naturally with a colon cleansing fast and liver flush.

    Wish me luck!
